U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Zinc Compounds, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Zinc

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of various zinc compounds imported into the United States from different countries and localities. These compounds include zinc oxide, zinc chloride, zinc sulfide, zinc sulfate, chromates of zinc or lead, and lithopone. Tracking these imports is crucial for understanding supply chain dynamics in industries such as galvanizing, rubber manufacturing, chemical production, and agriculture, where zinc compounds serve as essential raw materials. The data also provide insights into trade relationships and market trends, which can influence domestic pricing, availability, and strategic planning for industries reliant on zinc compounds.

Analysis of the data reveals several notable trends between 2022 and 2023. Overall imports of zinc oxide decreased from 104,000 metric tons valued at $371 million to 98,700 metric tons worth $311 million, with Canada and Mexico remaining the top suppliers despite declines of 9,000 and 8,000 metric tons respectively. Conversely, imports from Australia surged more than threefold, from 148 to 477 metric tons, with a corresponding value increase from $989,000 to $3.09 million. Zinc chloride imports nearly doubled in quantity from 419 to 792 metric tons and increased in value from $2.83 million to $3.92 million, driven by significant growth in shipments from Germany and China. Zinc sulfide imports rose by 12% in quantity and 29% in value, largely due to a sharp increase in imports from Germany, which jumped from 292 to 1,340 metric tons. In contrast, zinc sulfate imports declined substantially from 95,200 to 72,200 metric tons and from $124 million to $66.8 million in value, with notable decreases from China and Mexico. Imports of chromates of zinc or lead ceased entirely in 2023, while lithopone imports dropped sharply from 1,110 to 233 metric tons. These shifts highlight evolving sourcing patterns and potential changes in industrial demand or trade policies affecting the U.S. zinc compounds market.
