This table provides detailed data on the quantities and values of zinc-bearing ores, slag, and ash imported into the United States, categorized by country or locality. This information is critical for understanding the supply chain dynamics of zinc, a metal essential for galvanizing steel, alloy production, and various industrial applications. Tracking imports helps assess the U.S. reliance on foreign sources for zinc raw materials, informs trade policy decisions, and supports market analysis for industries dependent on zinc inputs.
In 2023, the total imports of zinc-bearing ores and concentrates surged to 18,400 metric tons, a significant increase from 4,870 metric tons in 2022, with the value rising from $9.88 million to $21.5 million. Notably, Turkey emerged as a new major supplier in 2023, contributing 9,950 metric tons valued at $11 million, whereas it had no recorded imports in 2022. The Republic of Korea also began supplying ores in 2023 with 3,860 metric tons valued at $3.99 million, up from zero the previous year. Canada remained a consistent supplier, increasing its shipments from 1,610 to 2,230 metric tons. Conversely, Peru’s shipments decreased from 2,670 to 2,240 metric tons, with a corresponding drop in value. For slag, ash, and residues, imports declined from 9,310 metric tons in 2022 to 6,370 metric tons in 2023, and the value dropped from $20.6 million to $10.2 million. Canada continued to be the largest source for these materials, increasing its imports from 3,020 to 3,950 metric tons. Meanwhile, imports from Congo (Kinshasa), Germany, and Turkey ceased in 2023, while Mexico and Korea increased their contributions. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and supplier dynamics in the U.S. zinc raw material market.
