U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Miscellaneous Tungsten-Bearing Materials, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Tungsten

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of various tungsten-bearing materials imported into the United States from different countries and localities. It covers multiple product categories including tungsten metal powders, tungsten carbide powder, unwrought tungsten, waste and scrap, wrought tungsten, tungsten oxides, other tungstates, and other tungsten compounds and chemical products. This information is crucial for understanding the supply chain dynamics of tungsten, a critical metal widely used in industrial applications such as manufacturing cutting tools, electronics, and aerospace components. Tracking these imports helps assess the U.S. dependency on foreign sources, monitor market trends, and inform policy decisions related to resource security and trade.

Analysis of the data reveals several notable trends between 2020 and 2021. Overall tungsten content imported decreased in tungsten metal powders from 1,850 metric tons to 1,290 metric tons, with a significant drop in imports from China, which fell from 814 to 328 metric tons, while imports from Austria surged from 8 to 178 metric tons. Conversely, tungsten carbide powder imports increased substantially from 1,120 to 1,900 metric tons, driven by higher imports from China (584 to 726 metric tons), Canada (167 to 484 metric tons), and Austria (222 to 450 metric tons). Waste and scrap imports also rose from 2,240 to 2,830 metric tons, with Germany and Mexico showing notable increases. Wrought tungsten imports grew from 460 to 625 metric tons, largely due to a rise in imports from China (388 to 545 metric tons). Tungsten oxides imports more than doubled from 491 to 1,400 metric tons, primarily because of a sharp increase from Vietnam (150 to 1,060 metric tons). These shifts highlight changing sourcing patterns and growing demand in certain tungsten product categories, reflecting evolving industrial needs and international trade relationships.
