U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Tungsten Ores And Concentrates, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Tungsten

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of tungsten ores and concentrates imported into the United States, categorized by country or locality. This information is critical for understanding the supply chain dynamics of tungsten, a strategic metal widely used in manufacturing, electronics, aerospace, and defense industries due to its high melting point and strength. Tracking import sources and volumes helps assess the U.S. market’s dependence on foreign suppliers, monitor trade patterns, and inform policy decisions related to resource security and economic competitiveness.

Analysis of the data reveals a significant decline in total tungsten content imported, dropping from 2,020 metric tons in 2020 to 1,590 metric tons in 2021, a decrease of approximately 21%. Correspondingly, the total value of imports fell from $46.3 million to $37.7 million. Bolivia remained the largest supplier by volume despite a reduction from 1,090 metric tons in 2020 to 797 metric tons in 2021, with its import value decreasing from $21.9 million to $17 million. Notably, Australia and Germany showed substantial increases in tungsten content imported, rising from 6 to 43 metric tons and 1 to 46 metric tons respectively, with their values surging to $1.19 million and $1.17 million. Several countries such as Congo (Kinshasa), Czechia, and Poland ceased exports to the U.S. in 2021, while new sources like Burundi, Estonia, Thailand, and Vietnam emerged. These shifts indicate a diversification of supply sources amid overall reduced import volumes.
