This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of various tungsten-bearing materials exported from the United States to different countries and localities. The categories include ferrotungsten and ferrosilicon tungsten, unwrought tungsten, waste and scrap, wrought tungsten, and tungsten compounds. Tracking these exports is economically and industrially significant because tungsten is a critical metal used in manufacturing hard metals, electronics, aerospace components, and military applications. Understanding export patterns helps assess the U.S. role in the global tungsten supply chain, monitor trade balances, and identify key international markets for these strategic materials.
Analysis of the data reveals several notable trends between 2020 and 2021. Total tungsten content exported as ferrotungsten and ferrosilicon tungsten increased modestly from 15 to 19 metric tons, while the value surged from $101,000 to $518,000, driven largely by exports to the Netherlands and India. Unwrought tungsten exports, however, declined sharply in tungsten content from 274 to 30 metric tons and in value from $4.1 million to $2.34 million, with Canada remaining the top destination despite a reduction from 12 to 19 metric tons in 2021. Waste and scrap exports showed a slight increase in tungsten content from 948 to 986 metric tons and value from $13.3 million to $13.9 million, with Canada, Germany, and Malaysia as leading recipients. Wrought tungsten exports decreased in tungsten content from 566 to 436 metric tons and in value from $63 million to $55.7 million, with Mexico and Japan as major markets despite a notable drop in tungsten content for Japan from 245 to 5 metric tons. Tungsten compounds exports experienced a substantial rise in tungsten content from 10 to 407 metric tons and value from $133,000 to $10.7 million, largely due to increased shipments to Vietnam and China. These shifts highlight evolving demand and trade dynamics in the global tungsten market.
