This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of sulfuric acid imports into the United States, broken down by country or locality for the years 2022 and 2023. Sulfuric acid is a critical industrial chemical used extensively in manufacturing fertilizers, refining petroleum, processing minerals, and producing chemicals. Monitoring import trends and sources is essential for understanding supply chain dynamics, assessing market dependencies, and informing trade and industrial policy decisions.
Analysis of the data reveals that total U.S. imports of sulfuric acid increased slightly from 3.23 million metric tons in 2022 to 3.32 million metric tons in 2023. However, the total declared value decreased from $469 million to $413 million, indicating a possible decline in unit prices or changes in product grades. Canada remained the dominant supplier, accounting for approximately 1.8 million metric tons in 2023, a slight decrease from 1.82 million metric tons in 2022, but with a notable increase in value from $173 million to $243 million. Spain showed a significant rise in import quantity, increasing from 188,000 metric tons to 326,000 metric tons, although its value declined marginally. Germany’s imports nearly tripled in volume from 58,700 to 161,000 metric tons, despite a decrease in value. Conversely, imports from Belgium and Korea, Republic of, dropped sharply to near zero in 2023. New suppliers such as Italy and the Netherlands appeared in 2023, contributing 18,700 and 10,600 metric tons respectively. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and potential changes in sourcing strategies within the U.S. sulfuric acid market.
