U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Strontium Compounds, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Strontium

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and customs values of various strontium compounds imported into the United States, categorized by country or locality of origin. The information covers several key strontium compounds including celestite, strontium carbonate, strontium metal, strontium nitrate, and strontium oxide, hydroxide, and peroxide. Tracking these imports is crucial for understanding the supply chain dynamics of strontium, a critical element used in industries such as electronics, ceramics, pyrotechnics, and refining. Monitoring import trends helps policymakers and industry stakeholders assess market dependencies, price fluctuations, and potential vulnerabilities in sourcing this strategic mineral.

Analysis of the data reveals significant shifts in import patterns between 2023 and 2024. For celestite, imports from Mexico plummeted dramatically from 4,690,000 kilograms valued at $324,000 in 2023 to just 46,000 kilograms worth $5,980 in 2024, indicating a major disruption or substitution in supply. Conversely, Brazil emerged as a new supplier with 15,000 kilograms valued at $15,000 in 2024, where none were recorded in 2023. Strontium carbonate imports increased notably from China, rising from 475 kilograms ($5,130) to 51,500 kilograms ($96,800), and Germany remained the dominant supplier with 3,350,000 kilograms valued at $6,130,000 in 2024, up from 2,420,000 kilograms ($4,070,000) the previous year. Strontium metal imports from China also grew, from 36,200 kilograms ($325,000) to 48,900 kilograms ($437,000), while Madagascar appeared as a new minor source. Strontium nitrate imports declined overall, with Mexico’s shipments dropping from 1,220,000 kilograms ($3,310,000) to 988,000 kilograms ($2,270,000), and total imports falling from 1,530,000 kilograms ($4,040,000) to 1,330,000 kilograms ($2,990,000). Lastly, imports of strontium oxide, hydroxide, and peroxide decreased sharply, from 122,000 kilograms ($128,000) in 2023 to 41,900 kilograms ($99,900) in 2024, with France’s contributions halving. These trends highlight shifting global supply sources and changing demand patterns
