Soda Ash: World Production By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Soda Ash

This table presents annual global soda ash production figures by country or locality, measured in thousands of metric tons, spanning from 2020 through estimated data for 2024. Soda ash, a key industrial chemical primarily used in glass manufacturing, detergents, and chemical production, is critical to numerous economic sectors. Tracking production volumes by country provides insight into global supply dynamics, market trends, and the capacity of leading producers, which can influence pricing, trade policies, and investment decisions within the mineral and chemical industries.

Analysis of the data reveals that China remains the dominant producer, with output rising from 28.1 million metric tons in 2020 to an estimated 38.2 million metric tons in 2024, marking a significant upward trend. The United States is the second-largest producer, maintaining relatively stable production around 11 million metric tons annually, with a slight increase projected for 2024 at 11.7 million metric tons. Turkey and Russia also contribute substantially, with Turkey’s production estimated to hold steady near 6.1 million metric tons in 2024, despite a slight dip in 2023, and Russia maintaining output around 3.5 million metric tons. Notably, Ukraine’s production sharply declined from 450,000 metric tons in 2021 to just 100,000 metric tons in 2022 and remained at that level through 2024, likely reflecting geopolitical disruptions. Overall, global soda ash production is estimated to grow from 57.1 million metric tons in 2020 to 70.6 million metric tons in 2024, underscoring expanding industrial demand worldwide.

1Table includes data available through May 29, 2025. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals, U.S. data, and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2Synthetic unless otherwise specified.

3In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, Brazil, Chad, Iran, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Spain, and Tanzania may have produced soda ash, but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.

4Production is based on fiscal year, with a starting date of July 8 of the year shown.
