This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of soda ash exported from the United States to various countries and localities for the years 2023 and 2024. Soda ash, a key industrial chemical used in glass manufacturing, detergents, and chemical production, is a significant export commodity that supports numerous manufacturing sectors both domestically and internationally. Tracking these export figures helps to understand market demand, trade relationships, and economic trends affecting the U.S. mineral industry and its global competitiveness.
In 2024, U.S. soda ash exports increased in quantity to 7.4 million metric tons, up from 6.66 million metric tons in 2023, indicating growing demand. However, the total export value declined from $1.98 billion to $1.71 billion, reflecting a decrease in unit value from $298 to $231 per metric ton. Mexico remained the largest importer, receiving 1.3 million metric tons in 2024, slightly down from 1.4 million metric tons in 2023, but with an increased unit value of $258 per ton. Notable increases in export quantities occurred in China, which rose from 372,000 to 639,000 metric tons, and Malaysia, which nearly doubled from 298,000 to 555,000 metric tons. Conversely, Argentina saw a significant drop in exports from 220,000 to 130,000 metric tons. Several countries such as Honduras and Saudi Arabia reported no exports in 2024 after having small quantities in 2023. These shifts highlight changing trade dynamics and regional demand patterns for soda ash in the global market.
