This table presents global production figures for ferrosilicon and silicon metal, two critical materials used extensively in the steelmaking, aluminum alloying, and chemical industries. Ferrosilicon serves as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in steel production, enhancing strength and durability, while silicon metal is essential for manufacturing silicones, electronics, and photovoltaic cells. Tracking production by country or locality provides valuable insight into the distribution of supply sources, market dynamics, and potential shifts in industrial capacity that can influence global trade, pricing, and technological development.
Analysis of the data from 2019 through 2023 reveals that China remains the dominant producer of both ferrosilicon and silicon metal, with ferrosilicon output estimated at 5.6 million metric tons in 2023, despite a slight decline from 5.94 million tons in 2022. Silicon metal production in China has shown a steady increase, reaching an estimated 3.7 million metric tons in 2023, up from 3.5 million tons the previous year. Kazakhstan exhibited significant growth in ferrosilicon production, rising from 79,930 tons in 2019 to an estimated 196,000 tons in 2023, nearly doubling its output and indicating expanding capacity. Conversely, Russia’s ferrosilicon production declined notably from 842,657 tons in 2022 to 728,423 tons in 2023, reflecting potential supply disruptions or market adjustments. Other notable producers include Brazil, maintaining stable ferrosilicon output around 293,000 tons in 2023, and Malaysia, which showed a decrease from 230,735 tons in 2019 to approximately 139,529 tons in 2023. Overall, global production of ferrosilicon slightly decreased to 7.98 million tons in 2023 from 8.48 million tons in 2022, while silicon metal production increased to 4.36 million tons, underscoring a trend toward greater demand for silicon metal applications.
