This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of silicon metal imported into the United States from various countries and localities, categorized by purity levels. Silicon metal is a critical industrial material used in the production of aluminum alloys, silicones, and solar photovoltaic cells, making these import statistics vital for understanding supply chain dynamics and economic dependencies. Tracking imports by source country helps identify shifts in global trade patterns, potential supply risks, and opportunities for domestic industry growth or diversification.
Analysis of the data reveals a significant decline in total silicon metal imports for consumption in 2023 compared to 2022, with gross weight dropping from approximately 121,000 metric tons to 80,300 metric tons, and the associated value decreasing from $732 million to $434 million. Notably, imports of the highest purity silicon (more than 99.99% silicon) fell from 3,750 metric tons to 2,540 metric tons. Brazil and China, major suppliers in this category, saw reductions in volume, with Brazil’s imports decreasing from 1,780 to 1,260 metric tons and China’s from 372 to 95 metric tons. In the 99.00%–99.99% purity range, imports surged from 34,500 metric tons to 60,400 metric tons, driven by substantial increases from Australia (from 806 to 2,620 metric tons), Laos (from 100 to 2,900 metric tons), and Canada (from 7,320 to 26,400 metric tons). Conversely, imports from Norway and Thailand declined notably. The “Other silicon” category also experienced a sharp decline in imports, from 82,900 metric tons to 17,300 metric tons. These shifts suggest a reconfiguration in sourcing strategies, possibly influenced by market conditions, trade policies, or changes in demand for specific silicon grades.
