This table provides a detailed breakdown of the distribution of salt in the United States by producers, categorized by end use and type of salt, including vacuum and open pans, solar, rock, and brine. The data encompasses both domestically produced and imported salt quantities, measured in thousand metric tons, and highlights the diverse industrial, agricultural, food-processing, water treatment, and ice control applications of salt. Understanding this distribution is crucial for economic and industrial planning, as salt is a fundamental raw material in chemical manufacturing, food preservation, water softening, and de-icing, among other uses. Tracking these figures helps stakeholders monitor market trends, supply chain dynamics, and the balance between domestic production and imports, which can influence pricing, trade policies, and resource management.
Analysis of the data reveals that total salt distribution decreased slightly from 45,300 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 44,100 thousand metric tons in 2023. The chemical sector remains the largest consumer, with chloralkali producers using 17,600 thousand metric tons in 2023, up from 16,300 thousand metric tons the previous year, indicating steady growth in this critical industrial segment. Food-processing industry usage also increased from 1,750 to 1,860 thousand metric tons, reflecting rising demand in meat packing, dairy, and baking. Conversely, the agricultural sector saw a decline from 1,240 to 1,160 thousand metric tons, driven by reduced salt use among feed manufacturers and direct-buying end users. Notably, ice control and stabilization salt usage dropped significantly from 18,700 to 15,500 thousand metric tons, suggesting milder winter conditions or shifts in de-icing practices. Distribution channels showed growth overall, with total salt distributed rising from 4,250 to 4,960 thousand metric tons, highlighting expanded market reach and inventory movement. These trends underscore the dynamic nature of salt consumption across sectors and the importance of monitoring such data for informed industry and policy decisions.

1Table includes data available through February 11, 2025. Data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.
2The quantity of imports included in the total for each type of salt is the amount reported by the U.S. salt industry, not the quantity reported by the U.S. Census Bureau that appears in tables 1, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
3Because data include salt imported, produced, and (or) sold from inventory from regional distribution centers, data for salt sold or used by type may differ from totals shown in tables 1, 3, and 4, which are derived from plant reports at salt production locations. Data from these tables may differ from totals shown in tables 5 and 7 because of changes in inventory and (or) incomplete reporting.
4Less than ½ unit.
5Includes exports.
