This table presents detailed data on salt production in the United States, categorized by product form—bulk, compressed pellets, packaged, and pressed blocks—and by production type, including vacuum and open pans, solar, rock, and brine sources. This information is crucial for understanding the scale and composition of domestic salt output, which supports a wide range of industrial applications such as chemical manufacturing, food processing, water treatment, and de-icing. Tracking production by product form and type helps stakeholders monitor market trends, resource availability, and the economic health of the salt industry.
Analysis of the 2022 and 2023 data reveals that total salt production remained relatively stable, increasing slightly from 39.4 million metric tons in 2022 to 39.8 million metric tons in 2023. Rock salt production, the largest contributor, decreased from 15.7 million metric tons to 14.6 million metric tons, while brine salt production rose from 16.7 million metric tons to 17.4 million metric tons, indicating a shift toward brine sources. Bulk salt production saw a modest decline from 35.1 million metric tons to 34.6 million metric tons, whereas packaged salt experienced a notable increase from 2.64 million metric tons to 3.20 million metric tons. Compressed pellets and pressed blocks also grew, with compressed pellets rising from 1.45 million metric tons to 1.72 million metric tons and pressed blocks from 161,000 metric tons to 247,000 metric tons. These trends suggest evolving market demands and production methods within the U.S. salt industry.
