U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Rhenium Metal, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Rhenium

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of rhenium metal imported into the United States from various countries and localities for consumption. Rhenium is a critical metal widely used in high-temperature superalloys for jet engines, gas turbines, and other advanced industrial applications, making its import trends significant for understanding supply chain dynamics and economic dependencies. Tracking these imports by source country helps identify shifts in trade patterns, potential supply risks, and market opportunities within the global rhenium industry.

In 2023, the total rhenium content imported into the U.S. decreased to 10,200 kilograms from 11,900 kilograms in 2022, while the total value dropped more sharply from $13.4 million to $8.92 million. Canada emerged as the top supplier, increasing its shipments substantially from 1,260 kilograms valued at $1.24 million in 2022 to 3,050 kilograms worth $1.74 million in 2023. Conversely, Chile’s exports to the U.S. declined markedly from 4,900 kilograms ($7.45 million) to 1,190 kilograms ($1.31 million), indicating a significant reduction in supply from this source. Germany and Poland maintained relatively stable export levels, with Germany slightly increasing its volume to 3,500 kilograms and value to $3.28 million, and Poland rising to 1,990 kilograms valued at $1.82 million. Notably, imports from China, while still small in volume, grew over fivefold from 26 kilograms ($26,000) to 132 kilograms ($397,000), suggesting emerging trade activity. The appearance of Panama as a new supplier with 103 kilograms valued at $103,000 also highlights diversification in sourcing. Overall, these shifts reflect evolving global trade flows and the U.S. market’s response to changing availability and pricing of rhenium metal.
