U.S. Exports Of Rare-Earth Metals And Alloys, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Rare Earths

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of rare-earth metals and alloys exported from the United States to various countries and localities. It distinguishes between two main categories: ferrocerium and other pyrophoric alloys, and rare-earth metals and alloys, providing gross weights in kilograms alongside their corresponding export values in U.S. dollars. This information is crucial for understanding the economic and industrial significance of rare-earth elements, which are essential components in high-tech manufacturing, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Tracking export trends helps policymakers and industry stakeholders assess market demand, supply chain dynamics, and the U.S. position in the global rare-earth metals market.

Analysis of the data reveals substantial growth in exports from 2021 to 2022. For ferrocerium and other pyrophoric alloys, total gross weight nearly doubled from 929,000 kilograms to 1,710,000 kilograms, while the total export value increased by approximately 45%, from $8.66 million to $12.6 million. Notably, Madagascar emerged as a significant recipient, with exports soaring from 140,000 kilograms valued at $476,000 to 955,000 kilograms worth $1.37 million. Canada also saw a marked increase in exports, rising from 162,000 kilograms ($838,000) to 353,000 kilograms ($1.52 million). Conversely, exports to Colombia and Mexico declined sharply in weight but showed mixed value trends. In the rare-earth metals and alloys category, total exports increased modestly in weight from 16,100 to 19,200 kilograms and in value from $1.39 million to $1.72 million. Austria experienced a notable rise, with exports growing from 3,680 kilograms valued at $232,000 to 12,700 kilograms worth $679,000. Meanwhile, China’s exports dropped significantly in weight from 4,500 to 261 kilograms but increased in value from $150,000 to $32,700, indicating possible shifts in product composition or pricing. Overall, these trends highlight evolving trade patterns and the growing importance of certain markets in the U.S. rare-earth metals export landscape.
