Pumice And Related Materials: World Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Pumice and Pumicite

This table presents the annual global production volumes of pumice and related materials, such as pozzolan and volcanic tuff, broken down by country or locality from 2020 through 2024. These materials are essential in various industrial applications, including construction, agriculture, and manufacturing. Pumice is widely used as a lightweight aggregate in concrete and as an abrasive, while pozzolan is valued for its cementitious properties that enhance the durability and sustainability of concrete. Tracking production trends helps stakeholders understand market dynamics, resource availability, and potential shifts in supply chains that can impact economic activities worldwide.

Analyzing the data reveals that Turkey remains the dominant producer, with output increasing from approximately 7.0 million metric tons in 2020 to an estimated 9.7 million metric tons in 2024, reflecting strong demand or expanded mining capacity. Other significant producers include Jordan, which saw a steady rise from about 710,000 metric tons in 2020 to an estimated 1.1 million metric tons in 2024, and the United States, which experienced fluctuations—dropping to 295,000 metric tons in 2022 before rebounding to 410,000 metric tons in 2024. Notably, Greece’s production peaked at over 1.3 million metric tons in 2022 but declined to around 1.0 million metric tons by 2024. Overall world production showed variability, with a dip in 2022 to 18.2 million metric tons followed by a recovery to 20.2 million metric tons in 2023 and 2024. These trends highlight shifting production patterns and the importance of monitoring regional outputs to anticipate supply changes in this vital mineral sector.

1Table includes data available through May 19, 2025. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals, U.S. data, and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, a number of other countries, including Iran, Martinique, and Mexico, may have produced limited quantities of pumice and related materials, but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.

3Production is based on fiscal year, with a starting date of July 8 of the year shown.
