U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Potash, By Type

Home > Minerals > Potash

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of potash imports into the United States, categorized by type and source country. Potash, primarily used as a key ingredient in fertilizers, plays a critical role in supporting agricultural productivity and food security. Tracking import volumes and values by type—such as potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and other potassium fertilizers—provides insight into supply chain dynamics and market trends that influence domestic fertilizer availability and pricing. This information is essential for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts monitoring the health of the agricultural inputs sector and its impact on the broader economy.

Analysis of the data reveals that total potash imports increased from 9.27 million metric tons in 2023 to 9.85 million metric tons in 2024, reflecting a growth in demand or supply adjustments. Potassium chloride remains the dominant type, with imports rising from 9.01 million metric tons in 2023 to 9.52 million metric tons in 2024, sourced primarily from Canada (80% in 2024) and Russia (increasing from 11% to 16%). Potassium sulfate imports saw a notable increase of over 50%, from 78,100 metric tons to 122,000 metric tons, with Germany emerging as the leading supplier at 58%. Potassium nitrate imports also grew by approximately 24%, with Chile supplying the majority share at 73%. Interestingly, imports of other potassium fertilizers decreased slightly in quantity but shifted in supplier composition, with Israel and Egypt becoming more prominent. Despite an overall increase in volume, the total customs value of potash imports declined from $3.13 billion in 2023 to $2.51 billion in 2024, suggesting possible price fluctuations or changes in contract terms. These trends highlight evolving global trade patterns and the United States’ reliance on a diverse set of international suppliers for its potash needs.
