U.S. Exports Peat, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Peat

This table presents detailed information on the quantity and customs value of peat exported from the United States to various countries and localities over the years 2022 and 2023. Peat, an organic material harvested from wetlands, is used in horticulture, agriculture, and as a fuel source, making its trade significant for industries reliant on soil amendments and energy production. Tracking export volumes and values by destination helps assess market demand, trade relationships, and economic trends within the peat sector, providing valuable insights for policymakers and businesses engaged in the mineral and agricultural supply chains.

Analyzing the data reveals a slight decrease in total peat exports from 43,000 metric tons in 2022 to 42,400 metric tons in 2023, accompanied by a more pronounced decline in export value from $26.8 million to $21 million. Canada remains the largest importer, accounting for 25,100 metric tons in 2023, though its customs value dropped significantly from $16.5 million to $12 million. Mexico, the second-largest market, saw a reduction in both quantity and value, with exports falling from 13,100 to 11,500 metric tons and value decreasing from $8.16 million to $6.4 million. Conversely, South Africa experienced growth in exports, increasing from 2,650 to 3,040 metric tons and value rising from $1.05 million to $1.21 million. The category labeled "Other," which includes smaller markets, also showed an increase in quantity and value. These shifts suggest changing demand patterns and pricing dynamics in the global peat market, with some regions expanding their imports while traditional markets contract.
