U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Peat, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Peat

This table presents detailed data on the quantity and customs value of peat imported into the United States from various countries and localities. Peat, an organic material used primarily in horticulture, agriculture, and energy production, plays a vital role in several industrial sectors. Tracking import volumes and values by country helps stakeholders understand supply chain dynamics, market trends, and potential shifts in sourcing strategies, which are crucial for economic planning and resource management.

In 2023, the total U.S. imports of peat decreased to 1,170,000 metric tons, down from 1,440,000 metric tons in 2022, representing an 18.8% decline in quantity. Correspondingly, the total customs value dropped from $501 million to $459 million. Canada remained the dominant supplier, accounting for 1,110,000 metric tons in 2023, although this was a notable decrease from 1,360,000 metric tons the previous year. Estonia showed a significant increase in exports to the U.S., rising from 8,320 to 14,200 metric tons, with a slight increase in value to $3.22 million. Denmark and Spain emerged as new suppliers in 2023, contributing 1,490 and 1,900 metric tons respectively, while imports from Russia ceased entirely. Other countries with smaller quantities collectively declined from 3,970 to 1,850 metric tons. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and diversification in peat sourcing for the U.S. market.
