This table presents detailed information on peat production and sales by producers across various U.S. states in 2023, highlighting the number of active operations, total production and sales quantities in metric tons, sales value in thousands of dollars, and the average percentage of peat packaged for sale. This data is crucial for understanding the economic and industrial significance of peat, which is used in horticulture, agriculture, and energy sectors. Tracking production and sales by state helps identify regional contributions to the peat market, informs resource management decisions, and supports economic planning related to this natural resource.
In 2023, U.S. peat production totaled 329,000 metric tons from 26 active operations, with sales reaching 498,000 metric tons valued at $11.5 million. The East region, led by Florida with four operations, produced 197,000 metric tons and sold 169,000 metric tons valued at $4.14 million, though only 2% of its peat was packaged on average. The "Other" states in the East, including Maine, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, contributed 43,400 metric tons in production and 43,600 metric tons in sales, valued at $2.07 million. The Great Lakes and West region, with 16 operations, produced 89,200 metric tons but sold a notably higher quantity of 285,000 metric tons valued at $5.24 million. Minnesota, with eight operations, produced 48,100 metric tons and sold 44,800 metric tons, with a significantly higher packaging rate of 36%. The remaining states in this region, including Alaska, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Washington, showed an exceptionally high packaging average of 96%, selling 240,000 metric tons despite a lower production of 41,100 metric tons, indicating possible inventory sales or imports. Overall, the data reveals a strong regional disparity in packaging practices and sales volumes, with the Great Lakes and West region dominating in sales quantity and packaging intensity.
