This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of anhydrous ammonia imported into the United States from various countries and localities. Anhydrous ammonia is a critical industrial chemical primarily used as a fertilizer in agriculture, making its import patterns significant for understanding supply chain dynamics, pricing, and availability for U.S. farmers and industries. Tracking these imports helps policymakers and businesses monitor trade dependencies, assess market trends, and make informed decisions related to agricultural production and chemical manufacturing.
The data reveal a decline in total imports from 2,350 thousand metric tons valued at $2.48 billion in 2022 to 2,090 thousand metric tons valued at $1.34 billion in 2023. Canada and Trinidad and Tobago remain the top suppliers, though both experienced decreases in volume and value; Canadian imports fell from 1,120 to 1,060 thousand metric tons and in value from $1.1 billion to $783 million, while Trinidad and Tobago's imports dropped from 1,210 to 957 thousand metric tons and from $1.35 billion to $512 million. Notably, imports from Algeria, Brazil, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia appeared in 2023 after being zero the previous year, contributing 25, 18, 7, and 20 thousand metric tons respectively, indicating diversification in sourcing. Meanwhile, imports from Indonesia and Malaysia ceased in 2023. These shifts suggest evolving trade relationships and potential impacts on supply stability and pricing in the U.S. market.
