This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of anhydrous ammonia exported from the United States to various countries and localities. Anhydrous ammonia is a critical industrial chemical primarily used as a fertilizer in agriculture, making its trade flows important indicators of both domestic production capacity and international demand. Tracking export volumes and values by destination helps stakeholders understand market dynamics, assess economic relationships, and guide policy decisions related to trade, agriculture, and chemical manufacturing sectors.
In 2023, U.S. exports of anhydrous ammonia increased significantly in volume, rising from 875 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 1,083 thousand metric tons, representing a notable growth in shipments abroad. However, the total value of these exports declined sharply from $574 million to $325 million, suggesting a substantial drop in unit prices or changes in contract terms. Chile remained the largest importer by volume, with exports growing from 130 to 217 thousand metric tons, though its value decreased from $49.7 million to $30.5 million. Morocco and Norway also saw high volumes but experienced declines in export value, with Morocco’s shipments decreasing slightly from 192 to 180 thousand metric tons and value nearly halving from $105 million to $59.2 million. Belgium and the Netherlands showed strong increases in both volume and value, with Belgium’s exports rising from 38 to 67 thousand metric tons and value nearly quintupling to $20.7 million. New importers like Turkey appeared in 2023 with 54 thousand metric tons valued at $5.4 million. Overall, the data reflect shifting trade patterns and pricing pressures in the global anhydrous ammonia market.
