This table presents detailed data on the quantities of fixed nitrogen compounds held in stock by U.S. producers at the end of specified periods within the calendar years 2022 and 2023. These compounds, including ammonia, nitrogen solutions, ammonium phosphates, and ammonium sulfate, are critical inputs in agricultural fertilizers and various industrial processes. Tracking producer stocks provides valuable insight into supply chain dynamics, potential market availability, and inventory management strategies, all of which have significant economic implications for sectors reliant on nitrogen-based products.
Analysis of the data reveals a notable overall decline in yearend total stocks, decreasing from 684 thousand metric tons of nitrogen content in 2022 to 524 thousand metric tons in 2023. Ammonia stocks showed a mixed pattern, increasing from 390 to 420 thousand metric tons in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, but then dropping sharply from 440 to 350 thousand metric tons in the latter half of the year. Nitrogen solutions experienced a consistent decrease, with first-half stocks falling from 250 to 170 thousand metric tons and second-half stocks declining from 180 to 140 thousand metric tons. Ammonium phosphates and ammonium sulfate also saw reductions, particularly in the second half of 2023, where ammonium phosphates stocks halved from 40 to 20 thousand metric tons and ammonium sulfate stocks dropped from 24 to 14 thousand metric tons. These trends suggest tightening inventories across most fixed nitrogen compounds, potentially reflecting shifts in production, demand, or supply chain constraints during 2023.
