This table presents the production capacities of domestic companies manufacturing anhydrous ammonia in 2023, measured in thousand metric tons per year. This data is critical for understanding the supply capabilities of a key industrial chemical used primarily in fertilizer production, which directly impacts agricultural productivity and food security. Additionally, anhydrous ammonia serves as a building block for various chemical products and is essential for industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to explosives. Monitoring these capacities helps stakeholders assess the robustness of the domestic supply chain, potential bottlenecks, and the economic health of the nitrogen fertilizer sector.
In 2023, the total domestic production capacity for anhydrous ammonia reached 18,200 thousand metric tons per year. CF Industries Holdings, Inc. stands out as the largest producer, with a combined capacity of 7,002 thousand metric tons across multiple plants in Louisiana, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Mississippi, representing nearly 39% of the total capacity. Nutrien Ltd. follows with significant capacity distributed across six locations, totaling approximately 2,965 thousand metric tons, although two of its plants in Kenai, Alaska, and Kennewick, Washington, were idle during this period. Other notable producers include Koch Fertilizer, LLC, and Dyno Nobel Louisiana Ammonia, LLC, with capacities of 1,825 and 800 thousand metric tons, respectively. The data also reveals a geographic concentration of production in the Midwest and Southern states, underscoring regional industrial hubs for nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing. The presence of idle plants suggests potential for capacity adjustments in response to market demand or operational considerations.
