Major Downstream Nitrogen Compounds Produced In The United States

Home > Minerals > Nitrogen

This table presents detailed production data for key nitrogen-based chemical compounds manufactured in the United States, measured in thousand metric tons. These compounds, including ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates, ammonium sulfate, nitric acid, and urea, are essential inputs for agricultural fertilizers, industrial processes, and chemical manufacturing. Tracking their production volumes and nitrogen content provides valuable insight into the health of related industries, supply chain dynamics, and potential impacts on domestic and global markets. This information supports policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts in understanding trends in nitrogen compound availability and usage, which are critical for food security and industrial growth.

Analysis of the data reveals that total production volumes for these nitrogen compounds remained relatively stable from 2022 to 2023. For instance, urea production slightly increased from 9,440 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 9,460 thousand metric tons in 2023, with nitrogen content rising from 4,330 to 4,340 thousand metric tons. Ammonium phosphates also saw a modest increase in total production from 5,540 to 5,640 thousand metric tons, maintaining a nitrogen content of 710 thousand metric tons. Conversely, ammonium sulfate production decreased from 2,560 to 2,460 thousand metric tons, with nitrogen content dropping from 542 to 522 thousand metric tons. Nitric acid and ammonium nitrate production showed minor declines in total gross weight and nitrogen content. Overall, the data suggest a steady demand and supply balance for these critical nitrogen compounds, with slight shifts reflecting changes in agricultural demand or industrial activity during the first eleven months of 2024.
