This table presents detailed data on the quantities of major nitrogen compounds exported from the United States, measured in thousand metric tons of both gross weight and nitrogen content. These compounds are critical components in agricultural fertilizers and various industrial applications, making their export volumes an important indicator of U.S. participation in global nitrogen markets. Tracking these exports helps assess economic trends, supply chain dynamics, and the competitiveness of U.S. producers in supplying essential nitrogen-based products to international markets.
In 2023, total exports of major nitrogen compounds decreased slightly to 5,500 thousand metric tons from 6,020 thousand metric tons in 2022, with nitrogen content dropping from 1,970 to 1,920 thousand metric tons. Notably, ammonium nitrate exports surged by 40% in gross weight, rising from 482 to 675 thousand metric tons, with Canada and Mexico as the primary destinations, accounting for 55% and 27% respectively. Anhydrous ammonia exports also increased significantly by 23%, reaching 1,080 thousand metric tons, with Norway, Morocco, Chile, and Mexico as key markets. Conversely, diammonium phosphate exports declined by 26%, falling to 549 thousand metric tons, while urea exports dropped sharply by 38% to 820 thousand metric tons. Canada remained a dominant importer across several compounds, including monoammonium phosphate and urea, highlighting its role as a major trading partner in the nitrogen fertilizer sector.
