Nickel: World Mine Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Nickel

This table presents detailed data on global nickel mine production by country or locality, measured in metric tons of nickel content from 2019 through 2023. This information is critical for understanding the supply dynamics of nickel, a metal essential to numerous industrial applications including stainless steel manufacturing, battery production for electric vehicles, and various alloy uses. Tracking production trends helps governments, industries, and investors assess market stability, forecast supply availability, and make informed decisions regarding resource management and economic planning.

Analysis of the data reveals that Indonesia remains the dominant nickel producer, with output increasing significantly from 853,000 metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 2,030,000 metric tons in 2023, reflecting a more than doubling of production over five years. New Caledonia and the Philippines also rank among the top producers, with New Caledonia’s production rising to 231,217 metric tons in 2023 and the Philippines reaching an estimated 413,000 metric tons. Notably, total world nickel mine production has grown steadily from 2.52 million metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 3.75 million metric tons in 2023. Laterite ore production, which constitutes the majority of nickel output, increased from 1.67 million metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 2.9 million metric tons in 2023, underscoring the growing importance of laterite deposits. Conversely, some countries like Brazil and Cuba have seen declines in production in recent years. These shifts highlight evolving regional contributions and the expanding global demand for nickel.

1Table includes data available through November 7, 2024. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals, U.S. data, and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2Insofar as possible, this table represents recoverable mine production of nickel. Where actual mine output data were not available, reported data represent a more highly processed form to provide an indication of the magnitude of mine output.

3In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, North Korea may have produced nickel, but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.

4Often called mixed sulfide product or MSP.

5Subform should specify nickel hydroxide (see Managem Annual Reports).

6Often called mixed hydroxide product or MHP.
