This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of molybdenum products imported into the United States for consumption, categorized by product type and reported for the years 2022 and 2023. The data includes both gross weight and molybdenum content where applicable, along with the corresponding import values in thousands of dollars. Tracking these imports is crucial for understanding the supply dynamics of molybdenum, a metal essential for strengthening steel alloys, manufacturing high-performance materials, and supporting various industrial applications. The information aids policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts in assessing market trends, supply chain dependencies, and economic impacts related to this critical mineral resource.
Analysis of the data reveals several notable trends between 2022 and 2023. Total imports increased modestly from 50,900 metric tons to 51,400 metric tons, while the total value rose significantly by approximately 37%, from $1.16 billion to $1.59 billion. Unroasted molybdenum ore and concentrates saw a substantial increase in gross weight imports, rising from 28,800 to 30,100 metric tons, with value jumping from $511 million to $745 million, indicating higher demand or price increases. Conversely, roasted ore imports declined from 3,240 to 2,220 metric tons, though their value slightly increased. Molybdenum oxides and hydroxides more than doubled in quantity from 3,660 to 5,140 metric tons, with value nearly doubling to $201 million. Ferromolybdenum imports also increased in value from $311 million to $333 million despite a decrease in quantity from 10,600 to 9,190 metric tons, suggesting price shifts. Smaller categories such as molybdenum unwrought bars and rods and molybdenum waste and scrap showed notable growth in both quantity and value, reflecting diverse industrial demand. Overall, the data indicates a robust and growing market for molybdenum products in the U.S., with rising import values highlighting potential price pressures or shifts in product mix.
