U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Molybdenum Products, By Product And Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Molybdenum

This table provides detailed data on the quantities and values of molybdenum products imported into the United States, broken down by product type and country or locality of origin. Molybdenum is a critical industrial metal used primarily to strengthen steel and other alloys, making it essential for sectors such as construction, automotive manufacturing, and energy production. Tracking import volumes and values helps assess supply chain dynamics, market trends, and economic dependencies on foreign sources, which is vital for strategic planning and ensuring the stability of domestic industries reliant on molybdenum.

Analysis of the 2023 data reveals several notable trends. Total imports of oxides and hydroxides increased significantly from 3,660 metric tons valued at $106 million in 2022 to 5,140 metric tons worth $201 million in 2023, with Chile remaining the dominant supplier despite a decrease in quantity from 2,790 to 4,430 metric tons but a substantial value increase to $174 million. Molybdates imports also rose from 1,720 metric tons valued at $39.6 million to 1,690 metric tons worth $53.1 million, with Chile again leading and nearly doubling in value to $41.2 million. Ferromolybdenum imports decreased in quantity from 10,600 to 9,190 metric tons but increased in value from $311 million to $333 million, indicating higher prices or product quality; Chile and the Republic of Korea were key suppliers. Other molybdenum products saw a modest increase in quantity and a significant rise in value, with China and Canada among the top sources. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and the importance of diverse sourcing for the U.S. molybdenum market.
