Salient Molybdenum Statistics

Home > Minerals > Molybdenum

The table presents key quantitative data on molybdenum production, shipments, imports, exports, consumption, and stocks in the United States, along with global mine production figures. This information is critical for understanding the supply-demand dynamics of molybdenum, a metal essential for strengthening steel alloys and enhancing corrosion resistance in industrial applications. Tracking these statistics helps industry stakeholders, policymakers, and analysts gauge market trends, assess resource availability, and make informed decisions related to mining, trade, and strategic reserves.

Analysis of the data reveals that U.S. molybdenum concentrate production declined steadily from 51,100 metric tons in 2020 to 34,000 metric tons in 2023, marking a significant reduction of approximately 33% over three years. Shipments followed a similar downward trend, reflecting reduced domestic output. Imports for consumption, however, showed a modest increase from 15,700 metric tons in 2022 to 16,200 metric tons in 2023, indicating a growing reliance on foreign sources to meet demand. Exports of concentrates fell sharply from 64,100 metric tons in 2019 to 49,000 metric tons in 2023, suggesting a contraction in surplus available for international markets. Reported consumption of primary molybdenum products remained relatively stable around 16,000 metric tons annually, while exports of these products peaked at 4,860 metric tons in 2022 before declining to 4,230 metric tons in 2023. Globally, mine production decreased from 290,000 metric tons in 2020 to 248,000 metric tons in 2023, reflecting a broader tightening of supply that may influence prices and trade flows worldwide.
