Estimated Ground Mica Sold Or Used By Producers In The United States, By End Use And Method Of Grinding

Home > Minerals > Mica

This table presents detailed estimates of ground mica quantities sold or used by producers in the United States, categorized by end use and method of grinding. The data encompasses various industrial applications such as joint compound, paint, plastics, and other miscellaneous uses, reflecting the diverse role mica plays in manufacturing and construction sectors. Additionally, the table distinguishes between dry and wet grinding methods, which influence the physical properties and suitability of mica for different applications. Understanding these figures is crucial for assessing market demand, production trends, and the economic impact of mica within the U.S. mineral industry.

Analysis of the 2023 data reveals that joint compound remains the dominant end use, maintaining a steady quantity of 32,000 metric tons with a value of $8.7 million, consistent with the previous year. However, the paint sector experienced a notable decline in quantity from 19,000 to 16,000 metric tons and a corresponding value drop from $7 million to $6 million, despite a slight increase in unit value from $370 to $390 per ton. Plastics usage saw a modest increase in quantity to 1,700 metric tons and value to $1.1 million, though unit value decreased slightly. The "Other" category decreased both in quantity and value, from 14,000 to 12,000 metric tons and $4.1 million to $3.4 million, respectively. Overall, total ground mica sold or used declined from 66,000 to 61,000 metric tons, with total value falling from $21 million to $19 million, while the average unit value rose from $310 to $320 per ton. Data on grinding methods remain withheld due to proprietary concerns, but unit values suggest wet grinding commands a higher price than dry grinding.
