This table presents detailed data on the United States' trade in mica, covering both exports and imports for consumption across various forms, including scrap and flake mica (powder and waste) as well as sheet mica (unworked and worked). This information is crucial for understanding the economic and industrial dynamics of the mica market, as mica is widely used in electronics, construction materials, cosmetics, and automotive industries due to its insulating and heat-resistant properties. Tracking trade volumes and values helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts gauge supply chain stability, market demand, and the competitiveness of U.S. mica-related industries on a global scale.
Analyzing the data from 2022 to 2023 reveals notable shifts in both exports and imports. U.S. exports of scrap and flake mica powder decreased from 4,450 metric tons valued at $10 million in 2022 to 3,630 metric tons valued at $8.42 million in 2023, indicating a decline in volume and value. However, exports of scrap and flake mica waste surged significantly from 3 metric tons ($16,000) to 105 metric tons ($8.55 million), suggesting a growing market or increased demand for this category. Sheet mica exports also increased, with worked sheet mica rising from 803 metric tons ($16.4 million) to 1,000 metric tons ($18.8 million). On the import side, total mica imports slightly declined from 57,700 metric tons valued at $26.9 million in 2022 to 56,900 metric tons valued at $23.7 million in 2023. Notably, imports of scrap and flake mica powder decreased from 21,000 to 18,200 metric tons, while imports of worked sheet mica increased marginally from 4,190 to 4,230 metric tons. These trends reflect shifting demand patterns and possibly evolving sourcing strategies within the U.S. mica market.
