Mercury: World Mine Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Mercury

This table presents global mine production data for mercury, broken down by country or locality over the five-year period from 2019 to 2023. Such data is critical for understanding the supply dynamics of mercury, a metal used in various industrial applications including electronics, chemical manufacturing, and artisanal gold mining. Monitoring production trends helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and environmental agencies assess market availability, potential environmental impacts, and the need for regulatory measures given mercury’s toxicity and global trade restrictions.

Analysis of the data reveals a significant decline in total world mercury mine production, dropping from 2,500 metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 1,130 metric tons in 2023. China remains the dominant producer, although its output has decreased markedly from 2,232 metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 1,000 metric tons in 2023. Tajikistan is the second-largest producer, with production fluctuating but estimated steady at around 100 metric tons in recent years. Other countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, and Norway have maintained relatively low but stable production levels. Notably, Mexico’s reported production has been inconsistent, with estimates showing zero output in 2022 and 2023. The United States’ mercury production data is not available, reflecting its status as a byproduct producer rather than a primary source. Overall, the downward trend in mercury mining highlights tightening supply conditions and possibly increased regulatory pressures worldwide.

1Table includes data available through May 15, 2024. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, Canada, Indonesia, and Spain may have produced byproduct mercury, but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.
