This table presents the global production of magnesium, broken down by individual countries and localities over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023. Magnesium is a critical industrial metal used extensively in aerospace, automotive manufacturing, electronics, and as an alloying agent to improve the strength and corrosion resistance of other metals. Tracking production volumes by country provides valuable insights into supply dynamics, market trends, and potential geopolitical influences on the availability and pricing of this essential material.
Analysis of the data reveals that China remains the dominant producer, although its output declined significantly from 933,300 metric tons in 2022 to 804,500 metric tons in 2023, marking a notable decrease of approximately 13.8%. Total world production also fell sharply in 2023 to 900,000 metric tons, down from 1,050,000 metric tons the previous year, reflecting a broader contraction in supply. Other countries showed mixed trends; for example, Kazakhstan increased production from 16,000 metric tons in 2020 to a peak of 27,000 metric tons in 2022 before dropping to 22,000 metric tons in 2023. Russia’s output declined steadily from 67,000 metric tons in 2019 to an estimated 18,000 metric tons in 2023, likely influenced by geopolitical factors. Some producers like Iran maintained steady output at 5,000 metric tons annually since 2021, while Ukraine’s production ceased entirely by 2023. The United States withheld data for recent years, indicating proprietary concerns or limited production. Overall, these shifts highlight the evolving landscape of magnesium supply, with significant implications for global industries dependent on this metal.
