U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Magnesium, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Magnesium

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of magnesium imported into the United States for consumption, categorized by country or locality and by product form, including waste and scrap, metal, alloys, and powder, sheets, tubing, ribbons, wire, and other forms. This information is crucial for understanding the supply dynamics of magnesium, a lightweight metal essential to various industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and construction. Tracking import sources and volumes helps assess the U.S. market’s dependence on foreign suppliers, informs trade policy decisions, and supports strategic planning for domestic production and recycling initiatives.

Analysis of the data reveals that total magnesium imports decreased from 2022 to 2023 across most categories. For example, the total quantity of waste and scrap imports fell from 31,700 metric tons valued at $150 million in 2022 to 24,600 metric tons valued at $88 million in 2023. Similarly, metal imports slightly declined from 36,500 to 31,200 metric tons, while alloys saw a more pronounced drop from 33,700 to 27,900 metric tons. Canada remained the leading supplier of waste and scrap magnesium, increasing its shipments from 8,650 metric tons in 2022 to 10,600 metric tons in 2023, though its value decreased from $51.1 million to $44.6 million. Israel was the top source for metal imports, maintaining a high volume around 15,000 metric tons with an increased value reaching $165 million in 2023. Notably, imports from China declined significantly in both quantity and value across all categories, reflecting possible shifts in trade relations or supply chain adjustments. These trends highlight evolving patterns in U.S. magnesium sourcing, with implications for market stability and industrial supply chains.
