U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Lime, By Type

Home > Minerals > Lime

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of lime imports into the United States, categorized by type and country of origin. Lime, a critical industrial mineral, is widely used in sectors such as steel manufacturing, construction, environmental applications, and chemical production. Tracking import volumes and values by type—calcined dolomite, hydraulic lime, quicklime, and slaked lime—provides insight into supply chain dynamics, trade dependencies, and market trends that influence domestic production and pricing. This information is essential for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts monitoring the health and competitiveness of the U.S. lime market.

Analysis of the data reveals that in 2023, total lime imports slightly decreased to 343,000 metric tons from 354,000 metric tons in 2022, while the total value increased to $76.5 million from $70.2 million. Quicklime remains the dominant imported type, accounting for 243,000 metric tons valued at $48.3 million, with Mexico and Canada as leading suppliers; notably, Mexico’s quicklime imports rose from 38,500 to 52,600 metric tons, increasing in value from $5.7 million to $8.9 million. Calcined dolomite imports grew by approximately 10%, reaching 40,900 metric tons valued at $10.4 million, with Canada again the primary source. Conversely, hydraulic lime imports increased in quantity from 974 to 1,030 metric tons but saw a value decline from $644,000 to $464,000, reflecting possible price fluctuations or changes in product mix. Slaked lime imports remained relatively stable in quantity but increased modestly in value to $17.4 million, with Mexico and Canada as key contributors. Emerging suppliers such as Thailand showed notable increases in hydraulic and slaked lime imports, indicating diversification in sourcing. Overall, these trends highlight shifting trade patterns and evolving demand within the U.S. lime market.
