Leading Lead-Producing Mines In The United States In 2022, In Order Of Output

Home > Minerals > Lead

This table presents a ranked list of the top lead-producing mines in the United States for the year 2022, detailing their locations, operators, and the primary sources of lead extracted. This information is crucial for understanding the domestic supply chain of lead, a metal widely used in batteries, radiation shielding, and various industrial applications. Tracking production by mine helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and investors assess the health and capacity of the U.S. lead mining sector, which in turn influences economic planning, trade policies, and resource management.

In 2022, the Red Dog mine in Alaska, operated by Teck Alaska Inc., maintained its position as the leading producer, extracting lead primarily from zinc-lead ore. Missouri dominated the list with four mines—Fletcher, Viburnum, Brushy Creek, and Sweetwater—all operated by Doe Run Resources Corp., highlighting the state's continued importance in lead production from primary lead ore. Notably, mines producing lead as a byproduct of silver ore, such as Lucky Friday and Galena Complex in Idaho, and Greens Creek in Alaska, also contributed significantly to overall output. Together, these eight mines accounted for 100% of the U.S. lead mine production in 2022, underscoring a concentrated production landscape with a few key operators and regions driving the industry.
