U.S. Imports For Consumption Of Lead, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Lead

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of lead imported into the United States from various countries and localities, categorized by product type including base bullion, refined lead, wrought lead products, and scrap. Tracking these imports is crucial for understanding the supply chain dynamics of lead, a metal essential to numerous industrial applications such as battery manufacturing, radiation shielding, and construction materials. The data helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts assess the U.S. reliance on foreign sources for lead, monitor market trends, and make informed decisions regarding trade policies and resource management.

Analysis of the data reveals that the total quantity of refined lead imported increased from 487,000 metric tons in 2021 to 538,000 metric tons in 2022, with the total value rising from $1.06 billion to $1.22 billion. Australia emerged as the top supplier, increasing imports from 38,900 metric tons valued at $94.5 million to 106,000 metric tons worth $249 million. China also showed a significant rise, with imports nearly quadrupling from 16,500 to 64,500 metric tons and value increasing from $40.1 million to $149 million. Conversely, imports from Canada decreased from 92,500 to 77,800 metric tons, and Russia’s shipments dropped sharply from 37,900 to 8,670 metric tons. Notably, Pakistan appeared as a new supplier in 2022 with 14,300 metric tons valued at $32.3 million. In wrought lead products, imports rose modestly from 11,400 to 12,600 metric tons, with Turkey showing a substantial increase from 1,370 to 2,910 metric tons. Scrap lead imports declined from 2,640 to 1,640 metric tons, reflecting shifts in recycling or sourcing practices. These trends highlight evolving global trade patterns and shifting supplier roles in the U.S. lead market.
