This table provides detailed information on the volume and value of iron ore imported into the United States, broken down by country or locality and type of product. This data is critical for understanding the supply chain dynamics of the U.S. steel industry, which relies heavily on imported iron ore to meet domestic demand. Tracking imports by source and product type helps policymakers and industry stakeholders assess market trends, evaluate trade relationships, and make informed decisions regarding resource security and economic planning.
Analysis of the data reveals that total iron ore imports increased from 3.03 million metric tons in 2022 to 3.54 million metric tons in 2023, a rise of approximately 17%. Brazil remains the dominant supplier, with imports growing from 1.65 million metric tons valued at $337 million in 2022 to 2.1 million metric tons worth $355 million in 2023. Australia also showed a significant increase in quantity imported, from 42 thousand to 67 thousand metric tons, although its unit value per metric ton decreased slightly from $36.24 to $34.12. Notably, imports from South Africa surged from 1 thousand to 16 thousand metric tons, accompanied by a decrease in unit value from $145 to $98.44 per metric ton. By product type, pellets constitute the largest share of imports, rising from 2.77 million metric tons in 2022 to 3.09 million metric tons in 2023, despite a decline in unit value from $209.47 to $168.02 per metric ton. These shifts highlight evolving sourcing patterns and price fluctuations in the global iron ore market impacting U.S. supply.
