U.S. Exports Of Iron Ore, By Country Or Locality And Type Of Product

Home > Minerals > Iron Ore

This table presents detailed data on the quantities and values of iron ore exported from the United States, broken down by country or locality and by type of product. It provides critical insights into the international trade patterns of iron ore, highlighting the economic relationships between the U.S. and its trading partners. This information is essential for understanding the supply chain dynamics of the steel industry, as iron ore is a fundamental raw material. Tracking these exports helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and analysts gauge market demand, price trends, and the competitiveness of U.S. iron ore in the global marketplace.

In 2023, total U.S. iron ore exports slightly declined to 11.1 million metric tons from 11.4 million metric tons in 2022, with a corresponding decrease in value from $1.14 billion to $1.11 billion. Canada remained the top destination, receiving 8.13 million metric tons valued at $800 million, marking a modest increase in quantity and value compared to 2022. Notably, exports to the United Kingdom surged significantly from 158,000 metric tons to 444,000 metric tons, with value rising from $5.52 million to $31.7 million. Conversely, exports to China decreased from 1.47 million metric tons to 1.35 million metric tons, alongside a drop in value from $209 million to $165 million. Among product types, pellets dominated exports with 9.38 million metric tons in 2023, slightly down from 9.42 million metric tons but with an increased unit value from $89.88 to $97.15 per metric ton. Concentrates saw a notable decline in quantity and value, dropping from 1.8 million metric tons valued at $286 million to 1.45 million metric tons valued at $183 million. These shifts reflect changing global demand and pricing dynamics in the iron ore market.
