U.S. Exports Of Iron And Steel Scrap, By Customs District

Home > Minerals > Iron and Steel Scrap

This table presents detailed information on the quantities and values of iron and steel scrap exported from the United States, broken down by customs district for the years 2022 and 2023. This data is crucial for understanding the flow of recyclable metal materials, which play a significant role in the steel manufacturing industry by reducing the need for raw ore extraction and lowering production costs. Tracking exports by customs district helps identify regional trade hubs and infrastructure efficiency, providing insights into economic activity related to metal recycling and international trade patterns.

Analysis of the data reveals a notable overall decline in both quantity and value of exports from 17.7 million metric tons valued at $7.67 billion in 2022 to 15.7 million metric tons valued at $6.77 billion in 2023. Major customs districts such as Los Angeles and New York continue to dominate exports, with Los Angeles shipping 2.17 million metric tons valued at $981 million in 2023, down from 2.48 million metric tons and $1.17 billion the previous year. New York’s exports remained relatively stable in quantity but decreased in value from $1.23 billion to $1.14 billion. Some districts, like Chicago, showed significant growth in quantity exported, increasing from 3,000 metric tons in 2022 to 26,000 metric tons in 2023, alongside a substantial rise in value from $1.9 million to $25.4 million. Conversely, districts such as Baltimore and Houston-Galveston experienced declines in both quantity and value, reflecting shifting trade dynamics. These trends highlight evolving regional export capacities and market demand fluctuations within the iron and steel scrap sector.
