Pig Iron: World Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Iron and Steel

This table presents annual pig iron production figures by country or locality, measured in thousand metric tons, spanning from 2019 through 2023. Pig iron, produced by smelting iron ore and scrap in blast furnaces, serves as a critical intermediate material in steel manufacturing. Tracking production volumes globally provides valuable insights into the health and trends of the steel industry, which is foundational to construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure development worldwide. These data also help assess shifts in industrial capacity, economic growth, and supply chain dynamics across different regions.

Analysis of the data reveals that China remains the dominant producer, with output consistently exceeding 800 million metric tons annually, reaching 871 million metric tons in 2023. India shows a strong upward trend, increasing production from 74.2 million metric tons in 2019 to 86.3 million metric tons in 2023. The United States’ production rebounded slightly in 2023 to 22.5 million metric tons after a dip in 2020. Notably, Ukraine experienced a sharp decline from 21.2 million metric tons in 2021 to just 6 million metric tons in 2023, likely reflecting geopolitical disruptions. Other countries such as Brazil, Japan, and Russia maintain substantial production levels, while some European producers like France and Belgium show marked decreases in recent years. Overall, global pig iron production hovered around 1.3 billion metric tons in 2023, reflecting relative stability despite regional fluctuations.

1Table includes data available through August 7, 2024. All data are reported unless otherwise noted; totals may include estimated data. Totals, U.S data, and estimated data are rounded to no more than three significant digits; may not add to totals shown.

2Production of pig iron is obtained from virgin iron ore and scrap smelted in a blast furnace for use in steel production.

3In addition to the countries and (or) localities listed, other countries may have produced limited quantities of pig iron, but available information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output.
