This table presents detailed data on the quantities of iron and steel products imported into the United States, measured in thousand metric tons, covering a wide range of categories including steel mill products, fabricated steel products, and cast iron and ferroalloys. This information is critical for understanding the supply dynamics of the U.S. steel industry, which supports numerous sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and transportation. Tracking import volumes helps policymakers and industry stakeholders assess market trends, trade balances, and potential vulnerabilities in domestic steel production and supply chains.
Analysis of the data reveals a notable overall decline in total imports of iron and steel products from 28,000 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 25,600 thousand metric tons in 2023. Among steel mill products, imports of ingots, blooms, billets, and slabs increased significantly from 5,070 to 5,870 thousand metric tons, indicating a possible shift toward raw steel inputs. Conversely, wire rods saw a sharp decrease from 1,350 to 852 thousand metric tons. Most other steel mill product categories, such as sheets and strip products, also experienced declines, with hot-rolled sheets dropping from 2,250 to 1,890 thousand metric tons and cold-rolled sheets from 1,970 to 1,400 thousand metric tons. Fabricated steel products imports decreased from 7,550 to 6,680 thousand metric tons, with industrial fasteners falling from 1,530 to 1,210 thousand metric tons. Cast iron and ferroalloys imports also declined from 10,200 to 9,050 thousand metric tons, driven largely by a drop in pig iron imports from 4,580 to 3,160 thousand metric tons, despite an increase in sponge iron imports from 3,520 to 4,350 thousand metric tons. These shifts suggest changing demand patterns and supply chain adjustments within the U.S. steel market.
