This table presents detailed data on the quantities of various iron and steel products exported from the United States, measured in thousand metric tons. Tracking exports of these products is crucial for understanding the health and competitiveness of the U.S. steel industry, which plays a significant role in supporting domestic manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure development. Export trends also reflect global demand and trade dynamics, influencing economic growth and employment within the sector.
Analysis of the data reveals that total exports of steel mill products increased from 7,560 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 8,190 thousand metric tons in 2023, indicating a positive growth trend. Notable increases occurred in categories such as ingots, blooms, billets, and slabs, which more than doubled from 111 to 273 thousand metric tons. Similarly, plates in cut lengths rose from 1,020 to 1,090 thousand metric tons, and sheets, hot-dip galvanized, grew from 1,190 to 1,390 thousand metric tons. Fabricated steel products also saw growth, with total exports rising from 1,290 to 1,380 thousand metric tons, driven largely by industrial fasteners increasing from 485 to 560 thousand metric tons. A remarkable surge is observed in sponge iron exports, which nearly doubled from 862 to 1,590 thousand metric tons. However, some categories such as structural shapes, heavy, and hot-rolled bars experienced slight declines. Overall, these shifts highlight a robust export performance with specific product lines gaining increased international market share.
