This table provides detailed information on the quantities of steel mill products imported to and exported from the United States, broken down by country or locality. Tracking these trade flows is crucial for understanding the dynamics of the U.S. steel industry, which is a key component of the broader manufacturing and construction sectors. The data highlights the sources of steel supply entering the U.S. market as well as the destinations for domestically produced steel, offering insights into trade balances, supply chain dependencies, and competitive positioning in the global steel market.
Analysis of the data reveals that total U.S. imports of steel mill products decreased from 28 million metric tons in 2022 to 25.6 million metric tons in 2023, while exports increased from 7.56 million to 8.19 million metric tons over the same period. Canada remains the largest trading partner, with imports slightly rising from 6.22 million to 6.25 million metric tons and exports increasing from 3.49 million to 3.73 million metric tons. Brazil showed a significant increase in imports, jumping from 2.33 million to 3.58 million metric tons. Conversely, imports from Mexico declined notably from 4.81 million to 3.8 million metric tons, although exports to Mexico rose from 3.53 million to 3.94 million metric tons. Imports from Russia effectively ceased in 2023, dropping from 422 thousand metric tons to near zero. Other notable trends include declines in imports from Taiwan, Turkey, and Vietnam, while exports to Sweden more than doubled from 7 thousand to 18 thousand metric tons. These shifts reflect changing trade relationships and supply chain adjustments within the global steel market.
