Crude Iodine: World Production, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Iodine

This table presents annual crude iodine production figures by country or locality, measured in metric tons, spanning from 2019 through estimated data for 2023. This information is critical for understanding the global supply dynamics of iodine, a mineral essential for various industrial applications including pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and chemical manufacturing. Tracking production trends helps stakeholders anticipate market shifts, assess resource availability, and make informed decisions related to trade, investment, and policy.

Analysis of the data reveals that Chile remains the dominant global producer, with output estimated at 21,000 metric tons in 2023, showing a recovery from a dip to 19,194 metric tons in 2021. Japan follows as the second-largest producer, increasing its production steadily to an estimated 9,900 metric tons in 2023. Turkmenistan and Iran maintain moderate but stable production levels, each estimated at around 700 to 770 metric tons in recent years. Azerbaijan’s production has fluctuated slightly but shows a modest increase to an estimated 200 metric tons in 2023. Indonesia and Russia contribute smaller quantities, with Indonesia producing about 30 metric tons and Russia maintaining a minimal output of 3 metric tons. The United States’ data is withheld to protect proprietary information, and while China and Uzbekistan may produce iodine, their outputs are not reliably estimated. Overall, world production has shown resilience, with a total estimated increase to 32,600 metric tons in 2023, surpassing the previous years’ figures.
