This table presents key quantitative data on iodine production, imports, exports, consumption, and pricing in the United States, alongside global production figures. Such information is vital for understanding the supply-demand dynamics and economic significance of iodine, a critical element used extensively in pharmaceuticals, nutrition, industrial catalysts, and electronics. Tracking these statistics helps policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers monitor market trends, assess resource availability, and make informed decisions regarding trade and domestic production strategies.
Analysis of the data reveals that U.S. iodine production figures are withheld to protect proprietary information, but import quantities for consumption have shown a notable decline from 4,270 metric tons in 2022 to 2,860 metric tons in 2023. Despite this drop in imports, the average price per kilogram of iodine surged significantly from $45.81 in 2022 to $61.55 in 2023, indicating tightening supply or increased demand pressures. Exports increased to 1,410 metric tons in 2023, up from 1,140 metric tons in 2022, suggesting stronger foreign demand or strategic stock adjustments. Consumption of reported inorganic and organic iodine compounds decreased in 2023, with inorganic compounds dropping to 2,010 metric tons and organic compounds to 568 metric tons, contributing to a total reported consumption decline to 2,580 metric tons. Globally, iodine production remained relatively stable, rising slightly to 32,600 metric tons in 2023 from 32,200 metric tons in 2022, underscoring the U.S. market’s unique dynamics amid steady worldwide output.
