U.S. Imports Of Helium, By Country Or Locality

Home > Minerals > Helium

This table presents detailed data on the volume, value, and unit price of helium imported into the United States from various countries and localities. Helium is a critical industrial gas used in applications ranging from medical imaging and scientific research to semiconductor manufacturing and aerospace technologies. Tracking import sources and trends is essential for understanding supply chain dynamics, assessing market stability, and informing policy decisions related to resource security and trade.

In 2023, the total volume of helium imported into the U.S. increased to 8 million cubic meters, up from 6.4 million cubic meters in 2022, representing a significant rise in supply. Correspondingly, the total value of imports rose sharply from $60.9 million to $91.8 million, while the average unit value increased from $9.55 to $11.43 per cubic meter. Canada remained the largest supplier, with imports growing from 3 million to 5 million cubic meters and a value increase from $37.4 million to $63.8 million, alongside a unit price rise to $13.84. Algeria showed a notable jump in quantity from less than half a million cubic meters to 1 million cubic meters, with its unit value also climbing from $6.94 to $9.10. Conversely, imports from Qatar declined from 3 million to 2 million cubic meters, although the unit price increased from $7.41 to $8.85. The “Other” category doubled in volume to 1 million cubic meters and more than doubled in value to $4.48 million, indicating diversification in supply sources. These shifts highlight evolving trade patterns and pricing pressures in the helium market.
