This table presents detailed information on the quantities and values of crude gypsum imported into the United States from various countries and localities over two consecutive years. This data is crucial for understanding supply chain dynamics and the economic impact of gypsum imports, which are essential for industries such as construction, agriculture, and manufacturing. Tracking these imports helps policymakers and businesses assess market trends, manage resource availability, and make informed decisions regarding trade policies and domestic production strategies.
Analysis of the data reveals that total imports increased from 6.87 million metric tons valued at $129 million in 2022 to 7.77 million metric tons valued at $155 million in 2023, indicating a notable rise in both volume and value. Spain emerged as the leading supplier, with imports growing from 2.51 million metric tons worth $49.3 million to 3.16 million metric tons valued at $63.5 million. Mexico also showed significant growth, increasing from 1.98 million metric tons ($27 million) to 2.2 million metric tons ($36.1 million). Conversely, imports from Canada slightly declined in quantity from 2.12 million to 2.06 million metric tons but increased in value from $44.2 million to $47.6 million, suggesting higher prices or quality. Smaller suppliers such as the Dominican Republic and Turkey experienced decreases in quantity but mixed changes in value, while the United Arab Emirates appeared as a new supplier in 2023 with 35,000 metric tons valued at $1.53 million. These trends highlight shifting trade patterns and the growing importance of diverse sources in meeting U.S. gypsum demand.
