This table presents detailed statistics on the quantities and values of prefabricated gypsum products sold or used in the United States, categorized by product type and measured in both thousand square feet and metric tons. These data are crucial for understanding trends in the construction and manufacturing sectors, as gypsum products are fundamental materials in building interiors, particularly for walls and ceilings. Tracking sales and usage helps gauge industry demand, supply chain dynamics, and economic activity related to residential and commercial construction, as well as infrastructure development.
Analysis of the 2023 data reveals a slight overall decline in total quantity sold or used, dropping from 28.2 million to 27.0 million thousand square feet, and a corresponding decrease in metric tons from 15,900 to 15,600. Despite this, the total value of these products increased from $5.26 billion to $5.87 billion, indicating higher prices or shifts toward more valuable product types. Notably, Type X gypsum board experienced growth in both quantity and value, rising from 8.29 million to 8.83 million thousand square feet and from $1.98 billion to $2.12 billion, respectively, suggesting increased demand for fire-resistant materials. Conversely, regular gypsum board saw a decline in total quantity from 16 million to 14.1 million thousand square feet and a value decrease from $1.97 billion to $1.85 billion. Water- and moisture-resistant board usage also increased modestly in both quantity and value, reflecting ongoing emphasis on durability in construction. These trends highlight evolving preferences within the gypsum product market and underscore the importance of monitoring such data for industry stakeholders.
